Emoji in UI/UX?

The promotional videos show that for some of the buttons you're using emoji for their icons. But then there's a redesign post here that shows that you're not using emoji. I think emoji looks really tacky in user interfaces, and I was wondering if that's changed?

Otherwise, this looks like a solid alternative to me to Fluent and Kerlig.
